Antique Musical Instruments/is my old cornet worth fixing ?

Question
I have a 1920-ish Henri Gautier Virtuoso Bb/A cornet that I've inherited from my uncle. Its currently playable, but the values are worn and leaking. I've learned to appreciate the sound, but want to know if its worth putting $300 into repairing the values or not. Or should I just look for a good used cornet to replace it. (The sound is muddy, not clear - it doesn't "sing". And the values are slow.) Serial # 20442

Answer
Well, the fact that the valves are slow would seem to indicate that either it is out of alignment, has something inside the valves that are slowing them down or the springs are shot.  If I had it, I would first find out why the valves were not moving smoothly.  Even valves that need replating should move freely and smoothly in the casing.

Next, I would use a heavy oil Hetmans Classic is one options, or even olive oil from the kitchen for a temporary test.  If the valves are in need of replating, this should temporarily give them better compression.  You should be able to get a reasonable idea of how they will play if rebuilt.

Lastly, I think you need to decide whether the improved sound is worth it to you for playing this horn.  You are not likely to get the money invested if you try to resell it.

But, if you have learned to appreciate the way this horn sounds, you might not be able to replicate it with a 'good used' cornet.

So, there is no clear answer, but those are the issues as I see them.

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
