Antique Musical Instruments/old trumpet question

Question
Hello!  I have an old trumpet/cornet that I am trying to find out information on. It is in really poor shape. The horn is engraved with the words: "American diplomat challenger"  By the mouthpiece is has "Made in Germany".  On the middle valve sleeve it is engraved "GLASSA"  And the numbers 6 5 4 on the three valves respectively.   It is a unique horn with hexagon levers for the two spit valves. Mother of pearl caps on the keys.  I do not see any other markings on the horn.   If anyone can tell me something of this piece I would greatly appreciate it!!!   Thank You!!!!!

Answer
Well that is interesting.

I believe what it has on the valve casing is actually Glassl.

Previously, I have seen pictures of - and have been told - that American Diplomat instruments were made by Huttl.

Both Glassl and Huttl were in Grazlitz.

It is possible that some US dealer - whose name I do not know - contract with both companies possibly at different times to make instruments which were then stenciled American Diplomat.

It is no older than 1923, which is when they were required to put the "made in .  . " information on the horn.

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
