Question
update:serial# 20587,located where the mouthpiece is?Its' the only# I can find. as well, it says elkhard??thanks so much!Reguards, sharon

Answer
hmm. . . The serial number should be on eht back of the horn, near where you right thumb is supposed to rest on it.

Can you see any other engraving on it?   It seems that the Martin company had two factories and one had a range of serial numbers and the other had it's own set. There may be clues there as to which factory made it.

So, if the number you found is the correct one, If it came from the original plant, it would have been made in 1921.  If it came from the "Indiana Band Instrument" plant, it would have been made in 1939.

(nitpicking. . . It is pronounced saxaphone, but it is spelled "saxophone".)

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
