Antique Musical Instruments/saxophone

Question
I have this really old saxophone that a family friend gave to me and I have been plaing it for a while now.It is in working condition and it only has a few scratches. The letter at the begining of the serial # is c and it is a Conn, there is also artwork on it, but I don't know anything else about it. I was wondering if you could tell me how old it is and how much it might be worth.

                                 Thanks!

Answer
Hi Miranda,

I can tell you that your sax was made in 1963-4.  In terms of its value, there are so many things that can affect value, so I wouldn't really want to guess.  However, I would expect that if it is in good adjustment, it probably plays better than what its value would indicate.

Some of those older horns play pretty well.  Some old musicians used to joke that saxophones didn't really start to play well until they started to turn green (like the finish was coming off).  That is probably an exageration, but the average older horn typically does play better than the average new horn.

So, enjoy what you have and thank your friend for giving you a 'player'.

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
