Question
I own a student size (3/4??) Antoine Courtois & Mille trombone imported by Foote (last bell engraved dates, among other engravings - Medaille D'or Paris 1878 & 1889) Can you tell me the relative rarity of the student size compared with full size models, and is it sufficiently valuable to have an appraisal done.

Answer
For a tenor trombone to be a tenor trombone, it has to be a certain length.  The bore of the tubing can vary, but the length of the tubing has to stay the same.

If yours is shorter than a tenor trombone, then it is not a tenor trombone, it is probably an alto trombone.  I've seen a few Foote imported Courtois tenor trombone, but not an alto.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
