Antique Pianos/Smith and Nixon Piano

Question
We have a Smith and Nixon Upright in our church where I am pastor with the serial number 16418. It was originally purchased from the Hollis Sparks Piano Co. Golden, Miss. What can you tell me about the age and relative value of this piano? Who do you recommend for restoration?
It is in relatively good condition and in tune with itself although I am sure it has been over 30 years since it was last tuned. One bass string has been replaced. We are auctioning off several of our older pianos and I am interested in this one myself. Thanks, cm

Answer
Hi Carl,

Thank you for contacting us. Your piano was manufactured in 1905. Smith & Nixon is not a bad piano brand. In our current economic and musical climate, we estimate your piano to be valued at around $500-800. If the piano just needs a tuning or minor repairs I suggest you contact a local RPT (registered piano technician) who can help you with minor repairs. You can acquire a RPT list at www.pianomart.com. Choose the "recourses" option and then the "find a technician" option, type in your zip code and you can get a list of experts in your area. It is a very helpful recourse for piano owners.
If restoration is something the technician suggests you should contact Lindeblad piano restoration.  You can reach them at www.lindebladpiano.com or by phone at 888-587-4266. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask.

Sincerely,
Robert Parker
