Antique Rugs, Carpets & Restoration/Tabriz Rug Question

front of rug

i hired someone from an antique rug store to come and appraise my rug yesterday. he told me it was 80 years old, wool, hand-woven, and worth about $6500.
it measures 159.5" x 197" and is very dirty (dirt is literally falling off when I clap it on floor.).
I am writing to ask you if you could tell me more about the motif, design, etc.
i am also wonderkng how someone can tell age of it.

please share whatever information you can.

Hi Missy,

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! I took a look at the images you provided and while I felt pretty confident in my assessment, I wanted to get a second opinion. The good thing is that my colleague reaffirm my thoughts.

The rug is actually not a Persian Tabriz but is a Turkish Sparta. If it were a Tabriz then it would be worth more. Based on the images, it looks like the rug was woven around 1910 and while the size is quite large, the design colors and type are all hard sellers. So again, based on the images I would estimate the rug to be worth around $2,500 - $4,000 on the retail side. But if you wanted to out right sell it, then you would probably get less than $1,000 and most likely closer to $500.

Hope I was able to help and here are some links in case you wanted to learn a bit more:

I have not yet come across any antique rug related questions that if I did not know I could not find the right answer for. I have been interviewed by numerous antique rug websites, blogs, and magazines and am consistently referred to as a source for information on antique rugs, carpets, and textiles.

I have been in the antique rug trade for over 13 years and deal regularly with the most well respected auction houses in the world (Sotheby's, Christies, Butterfield's & Bonham's, etc.) as well as interior designers and decorators, retail customers, and other dealers. I also purchase fine antique pieces and have traveled the world in search of the best of the best.

I have sold fine antique rugs for over 13 years and continue to deal with them on a daily basis. Since this is my career, I make it my prerogative to know everything there is about what I do and the pieces I deal with.
