Question
My grandfather just passed away and my family is now wondering what to do
with an old safe.  My grandfather did not know the combination, and we don't
know what is in it.  Can it be opened, and if so, is this something we can have
done in Asheville NC or should we get an expert in the Chicago area where
the safe is located?  I think it says patent 1822 or 1877, but the writing is
hard to read.  Thank you for your help!

The Patd date is probably 1877 as Diebold wasn't around in 1822!!!

I would probably get the safe opened and repaired while it is in Chicago.  It may cost a little more, but there are very few safe techs in NC.  You may not find one close by that can open it in NC.

Prices vary from area to area and shop to shop, but if you were in my area, you would be looking at $350-$450 and about 2 hours to open and repair the safe, with little to no damage that isn't repairable.
