Antique Safes/Very Old Safe

Question
I have a very old safe with a plate above the door showing "The Safe Cabinet Company" of Marietta OH.  I had to have the door drilled to get it open to verify that there were no records in the safe.  Inside the door is a plate which shows the above information plus "Inspected LF Safe #12788".  I also have a serial number of 105888 and there are many patents listed on a plate on the back of the safe.  Can you tell me the approximate age and cost of this safe?

Thank you.

Answer
Mary,

The "Safe Cabinet Company" made safes from the 20's to the late 1950's.  They made them under a couple of different lables, but they were all basically the same.
Unfortunately this was one of only a few companies that used Asbestos in the manufacture of their safes.  Not all of the models had it, but without testing (expensive) you won't know if you have one or not.
These safes were made relatively cheaply to address the war situations the country was in (WWI to WWII), and the recession years in the late 20's and 1930's.

If you have one in almost new condition, I would continue to use it.  In less than good condition it is a "throw away".  Value of the safe depending on the condition would be $0 to $250.

Disposal of the safe may include HAZMAT fees because of the potential of asbestos.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but at least you are armed with the info you need to make decisions concerning your safe now.
