Question
I just bought a cary safe, number on the handle is 61325 number inside plate is 722127 and the dial has pat Sept 16 1890.  The height 34 width 22.5 depth 22. would like to know approximate age and where I could get restoration parts.

Answer
Bruce,

Well, at least part of your question is easy to answer,  The Cary safe company has been out of business for 70-80 years.  There are no restoration parts available.  That being said, if you put some adds on ebay or craigs list (etc.)  you may find someone with an old Cary that will sell you parts.

Unfortunately there are no records available to age a Cary safe based on the serial numbers.  The best reference that I can give you would be the hinge "acorns".  Unscrew one and hold it in your hand, If it is a solid cast material, chances are it was made before WWI, if it is made from a molded sheet tin or brass, it was made after WWI.  This isn't a hard and fast rule, but it's a good indicator as most of the fabrication materials were going to the war effort.

The patent date on the dial, is the patent date for the lock, which is probably a "Yale & Towne".  All this indicates is the lock wouldn't have been made prior to this date and the safe wouldn't have been made prior to the lock.  Cary used these locks for most of their manufacturing period.  Cary was in business from the 1890's through the late 1920's to early 30's.
