Question
Hello, I have a safe that belonged to my great grandmother.  It is in my Grandmothers home which we are selling and we cannot locate the key to this safe.  I know that it has a key no combination lock.  It has WB Dodds and Company Cincinnati Ohio on the front.  It has a brass circle that slides over the keyhole that you have to move in order to put the key into it.  It looks like it would take a skeleton key.  Have you heard of this brand before or do you believe it may be a name of the company that may have had the safe?  I will probably need to get a locksmith to open it but just thought I'd ask.  I have not come across anything on the Internet for WB Dodds and Company that would give me a clue.

Thanks,
Lisa

Answer
Lisa,

Send me some pictures of your safe, full photos and detail pictures of handles, hinges, locks, art work or decorative items, wheels or castors, etc.

There were a number of safe companies that manufactured safes between the 1840's thru 1890's that would be similar to what you are describing.

It was a standard practice to lable the safe with the original purchasers name, though generally not the city that they were in.  Cincinnati was the location of many of the safe companies during the late 1800's.

I did find a US Patent for a safe lock by a Clarance L Dodds in 1949, but I doubt that it is any relation.

As soon as I see the pics I can try to give you some more info.
