Antique Safes/Old Safe

Question
My friend has a cast emblem on it that says "Danio & Roberts Improved Fire Proof Safe Boston".
Can you provide an approximate date of manufacture since I cannot find any reference to the company on line? The safe opens with only a key and it had been misplaced since the safe was given to him. Sounds like a job for a locksmith?

Answer
Donald,

Send me photos of the safe, as many times safes are sold by distributors that "re-label" the safes (mainly for advertising purposes).  Between 1840 and 1860, numerous companies in New York City and Boston manufactured fire-proof Salamander safes using the Wilder patent.  Safes made by a number of  these manufacturers have metal plaques with wording such as "Wilder's Patent Salamander Safe 1842," "Wilder's Improved Patent Fire-Proof Salamander Safe," or "Improved Patent Salamander Safe. C. Rich. N. York. 1842."

Some of these manufactures made safes patterned after others with their permission and some manufactures didn't.  As a result there were several lawsuits over the patent infringments.

Most locksmiths these days do not have the knowledge to hand fabricate a key for a safe lock, even most safe men can not accomplish this.  Very few of them have been schooled in the lost art of handmade keys.  In the 1800's in order to advance from an apprenticeship to a journeyman locksmith, you had to serve at least 4 years under a master locksmith and one of the final tests was to handmake an operational lock and a key to operate it.  Now no one apprentices and very few actually obtain a formal locksmith education before opening a business.

The oldest safe I have had to make keys for was close to 250 years old and had three separate keys required to operate it.

Please send me pictures of your safe so that I can get a better idea about its manufacture.  Full interior/exterior and detail photos of the handle, key hole, hinges, castors, cabinetry, lock & bolt work.

Send them to me at andy@securitysafeusa.com
