| Comment | Andy, The vault door is a Remington Rand, my mistake on the Strand part. We had the combination, however we do not use the vault except for paper storage and we never close/lock it, as such I wrote the combo on the wall across the hallway. In our renovation the combo was painted over, we were not able to retrieve the combo. I spoke to several safe/vault people locally, in Omaha and Chicago. I was informed by an older vault guy in Chicago, who knew a tremnedous amount about Remington Rand vaults, that since it was a 6, it was not possible to use a dialer, only to drill it. He stated that the cost of opening, none the less repairing the vault door would be well over $1,000.00 in labor plus the cost of his travel. He asked if we had access to the side walls and opposite end, which we did. We ultimatley hammer-drilled throguh six course of brick, 3 inches of concrete and then used a metal hole saw to cut a 2 1/2 inch hole into the vault on the opposite wall. We then cut an 8 foot long 2x4 down to 2x2, we then pushed the 2x2 across to the back side of the vault door, about 6 feet away. We were then able to reach the inside escape lever and open the vault door. Once we started we had it open in about 2 hours, a little repair on the brick and we should be back in business. I understand that our local locksmitth can reset the combo. Thanks for the help and timely response. Marc | ||
