Stephen...this sounds familiar. We are refinishing an old Nat. Safe and Lock Co. safe. A couple of the finials were missing. Fortunately I have a friend that is a professional machinist and used to work at Timken in the research and development (of metals). He told me the same thing...can't identify the threads on the existing acorn finials. We decided to under cut the "would-be threaded area" with no threads and simply Epoxy them in. I have not gotten to this step in our refinishing stage yet. I think instead of epoxying them in I will wrap the "would-be threaded area" with duct tape so they will still somewhat thread in (into the existing threaded are of hinge)and will stay put. They (in our case) are brass so we want to be able to remove them and shine them up every so often. The original ones appear to be a cast lead. Best of luck! Matt (Nahum 1:7)
