Question
Mike,

I have a Milners safe that I would like to sell.

It's approximate size is 24'' x 24" x 24". It is very heavy.

It appears to have the original paint and, although the paint work shows sign of distress, the condition is good.

There is a round metal brass-type plaque fixed to the front which says:

  PATENT FIRE RESISTING
           LONDON
           MILNERS'
MANCHESTER & LIVERPOOL
       SPECIAL SAFE

It is a key lock safe but the key is missing. The metal cover for the keyhole is still present and this says:

  MILNERS'
       SAFE
POWDERPROOF
 SOLID LOCK
   LONDON
         &
  LIVERPOOL

The safe has the following reference stamped on the front, top edge of the safe "C5798" and "177".

I can provide quality photographs at your request.

I would appreciate advice about how to go about selling the safe and it's approximate value.

Kind regards,

Adrian

Answer
Hello Adrian

Many thanks for your question.

Milner were world leaders at one time and there are scores of different models, so before I could comment on its value I would need a couple of pictures.  One with the door shut and one with it open so I can see the door thickness and the boltwork.

However, the escutcheon refers to a 'powder proof lock'.  They are referring to black gunpowder so this gives some idea of the obvious age of this safe.  Consequently it is unlikely to have much value as a security safe.  However, old Milner safes in very good condition with the original brass plate are often bought as curios at auction.

Send pictures to me directly at mike.palmer@tiscali.co.uk   There is no charge for this service.
