Question
Hi andy just to followup on the pic i sent several months ago on a safe built maybe in the 1840s you were going to try and find some more info on it   David

Answer
Hi David,

I'm assuming that you are the David Rowland that sent me the pictures of your old safe.  If not I appoligize, please refresh my memory of your safe.
If you are David Rowland, we still haven't been successful id'ing the safe.  Unfortunately there were about 40-50 small manufactures producing safes between 1840-1860.  Most of these were what we would consider today, a garage type business.  They didn't have assembly lines and the safes were built one at a time, maybe one or two safes per week.  There is also very little info about most of these companies.  Most of the slightly larger companies would go a step farther by having castings made for the castor support with their logo or name cast into the supports.  Or their names would be on a plaque.  This of course makes it easier to identify the safe.  In your case there are very few unique identifying features.  The hinge, key hole cover and handle are about the only items that we can use.  If we don't have a similar sample to compare to, then we have to simply keep looking at old safes, until we come across a similar one.
Don't loose hope, we will figure it out, in the meantime, you can take comfort in knowing that your safe is more unique than most!
