Question
i have this old safe i found in my house on the front painted on it says mosler bahmann 1883 cin'ti ohio. i do not have a combination for it. the knob look a little too shiny and modern to be from 1883, so i have two questions. what all can you tell me about it and is there anyway i can figure out the combination?

Answer
Samantha,

In 1867 Gustave Mosler and Fred Bahmann started the Mosler-Bahmann Safe Company.  After Gustave Mosler's death in 1874, the company kind of "split", with the heirs of Gustave Mosler starting up the Mosler Safe company and Fred Bahmann continuing as Mosler-Bahmann until the 1890's, but these were two separate companies.
If your safe has a patent date of 1883 the safe would have been made after this date or probably between 1883 and 1892(ish).

There are no records of combinations for these safes, so you have a couple of options -
1.  Assuming it is a 3 wheel lock, you have 1,000,000 possible combinations to try, or
2.  You can have a local safe technician (not a locksmith) open and repair your safe.  Cost should be around $350-$500 and take around 2-3 hours.

You may be right about the dial and lock, however, if the previous owner had any restoration work done on the safe, it may simply be a new finish or plating.

What else do you want to know.
