Question
I recently purchased a two drawer 1hr fireproof Shaw Walker filing cabinet for a good price. I was wondering if I should be worried about it containing asbestos. It has a material making up the walls that is white, and in the back of the cabinet was white powder. On the label inside it says "Fire Classification D Item 559764.

Answer
Ryan,

The fire classification "D" is for a 1 hour tested container without impact testing.

I doubt the material is asbestos, but if you are concerned, take a sample of the dust and have it tested.

As long as you are not actively inhaling the dust, and you keep it cleaned up, asbestos does not constitute a problem.  Unfortunately, the enviro-nazis and trial lawyers, try to make everyone believe that if you are within a mile of the substance you have the possiblity of coming down with mesothelioma.
Please check out the following web page if you have concerns:

The following web page will give you some tips on what to look for and if you suspect asbestos, it gives you a number of options for dealing with it.  It doesn't discuss safes or containers, so you will have to use some common sense when applying the tips.

Good luck, but I wouldn't worry excessively.
