Question
I have a friend who has an old safe.  He has had it for several years, and it always opened fine.  He recently opened it, then closed it, then he sanded the paint of the exterior, and painted the safe.  now he cant get the door open.  When he enters the combo and turns the handle i can hear the bolts move, but then when you try to open the door it does not move at all, It is not painted shut, as he has removed all paint from the door seam, it feels like the bolts are not retracting all the way.  The only number i could find was on the handle it was number 1644.  Any help would be great.

Answer
Clint,

It is probably just jammed, may be due to the paint dust.  Try pushing in on the doors - hard, while turning the handle.  You may have to apply a little pressure to the handle, but don't break it.

If that doesn't work, try wacking on the opening edge of the door with a "deadblow" hammer.  If you are hitting the door hard enough to cause damage you are hitting it too hard.

If the handle turns all the way but the door still want open, you may need to use a small pry bar or large screw driver.  fit it in under the bottom lip of the door, and lift and pry at the same time.  Again, if you are causing damage then something is not right.

If all that fails, you may need to have a safe technician examine the safe.
