i would like to know how to open a marvin safe. it got cold this winter and i have not been to open it since

In cold weather doors, etc. tend to swell, also because of the additional moisture rust may form & it doesn't take a large layer of rust to swell a door shut.  As your safe would have been built prior to 1892, the chances of rust are pretty high.
If you have any gap in the door, you may be able to force penetrating fluid in to the crack.  Wacking on the door with a rubber dead blow mallet, may also free up the stuck door.

Question, does the lock unlock correctly?  If not, then the problem may not be the door, or the cold.  If your lock is not functioning correctly it will not work correctly.  This can be a result of the cold or simply the grease is really old and is now hard.

If you do get it open, do not close and lock the door until after it has had maintenance done to ensure all these problems are taken care of.

If you still can't get it open, you will probably need a safe techician.
