Question
Hall\'s safe with rope
Hall's safe with rope
Hi Andy,

I recently acquired a Hall's safe with rope on the front.  I am looking for a date of manufacture. Inside the front door has a patent date of 1849.  The serial number is 129?? probably 12986, but not positive.

The woodwork was missing, but the safe contained one drawer that may or may not belong to the safe.  The lock on that drawer had a 1861 patent date on it.

I am also looking for photos as to how the original woodwork was configured.

I am sending about a dozen of photos to your business e-mail and am attaching a photo of the front of the safe to this site.

Again, thank you for your expert assistance, Randy

Answer
Randy,

Based on the serial number you provided (12986), this would place the manufacturing date of your safe around 1854-1856.  This would either indicate that the drawer is not original, or the serial number is not correct.  I tend to agree with you, especially since the cabinetry is missing, that this drawer was probably added at a later date.

When I receive your emails, I'll see what photos I have of original cabinetry for similar safes.
