Question

I have an old, locked safe in the garage of my business.  I am planning some remodeling and need the safe moved and would love to be able to get it open to see what is inside. The number dial says Hall's Safe&Lock Co. Cincinatti .O. It doesn't look very attractive but I'm very curious to see what, if anything is inside. I do not know anyone in my area that can open it, either nicely or by destroying it.  Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Christa,

This is an old Hall's Safe & Lock Company chest.  It would have originally been inside of a larger safe.   These WERE NOT built as a stand alone safe.   As Hall's Safe & Lock Company has been out of business since 1892, the chest and lock are considered antiques.

There are several good safe technicians in Washington State who can open the container for you - without destroying it.  NOTE:  I never recommend using locksmiths for safe work, as they generally don't have the training, knowledge or tools to work on safes without causing excessive damage.

In the Vancouver, WA area, you can contact Dave Mcomie at:  davemcomie@mac.com

In the Seattle area, you can contact:

NorthWest Safe & Vault Services
206-241-7233     George Thornton
P.O. Box 48231
Seattle, WA 98148-0231

I would recommend contacting Dave as a first choice.   He may also have names of several other people who might be closer to you.

Hope this helps.
