Question
Hi Andy, I am helping a friend clean out her family's building that once housed a trading post dating back to 1905. There are at least 5 old safes in the building and I was hoping you might give us some advice on their value. The building is going up for sale and we would love to get these super cool safes in the hands of a collector where they can be appreciated. If you are interested, please let me know what information is required. Thanks so much for your time.

Answer
Jackie,

Unfortunately, these safes have no collectible value, nor are they antiques.   These items are considered office equipment.

Another problem with the equipment is that the manufacturer was known to use asbestos as an insulation material in many of their products.   Which means, depending on your state, that these could be considered a HAZMAT item.   Selling, Transporting and/or disposing of containers with asbestos are tightly regulated with sever penalties for non-compliance.

My first recommendation would be to have the container tested to determine whether or not it actually has asbestos in the insulation material.   If you don't have a local HAZMAT testing agency, you can get a DIY type kit at most Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware or CVS Pharmacies.   You can also order it on line at:   http://www.prolabinc.com/asbestos-test-kits.asp

Generally on safes like this we charge between $400 to $600 to haul them away for disposal.

Sorry the news isn't better.
