Antique Safes/1823 English safe

I suspect this is not your normal question. I write historical romance - please do not groan - and hate it when the "historical" part is wrong. I have characters who need to burgle a safe in 1823 England. Is the only option one of the clunky steel boxes that were prevalent in the latter part of the 19th century? These are the only pictures I can find. Could this safe be smaller and hidden behind paneling? Would the lock be a key lock or a combination lock? I'm going to make up the burgling part - that's why they call it fiction - but I'd like the safe to be somewhat accurate.

No pictures came through with this request so you may need to send them with your email.

I may have some photos which will help you out, and we can discuss how they would have tried to break into the safes almost two hundred years ago.

Prior to the 1850's the key lock was a standard on safes, however English safes (and most European safes) have never really embraced the combination lock, in favor of the high security key locks.

Some of the safe companies that were in business from the late 1700's, through the 1800's and into the 1900's include
Chubb Safes (1818 to 2000)
Tann Safes (1795 - still in business)
