Antique Safes/Safe deposit box cabinet age.

Hi Terry. I have a cabinet/bank of safe deposit boxes that were made by the American Bank Supply Co. of Indianapolis, IN.  these were in the Silver Lake Bank in either Silver Lake or White Cloud Kansas.  Est. around 1909.  I'm simply looking for an age range for
these boxes.  thanks so much for your help.

Sorry, but I'm not going to be able to give you an "age" on this item.   Unlike auto's where manufacturers have "year" models, banking equipment manufacturers might have the same item available for decades, before making a change, depending on how popular an item it is.

Based on the photo, this item could easily have been available from the 1920's through the 1950's.   Chances are the bank did not get this item when they opened, so having the "established" date of the bank has no bearing on the equipment.   They could have purchased this item at any time.

Also, I doubt that these were ever used as "customer safe deposit" boxes.   The standards, dating back to the mid 1850's was to use dual custody locks for security.   Small drawers like these could easily be popped open, providing little or no security.   If these were ever used as safe deposit boxes, this bank was going as cheaply as possible!!!

Chances are much better that the bank was using these for items which needed to be locked up, but not as much protection was needed as regular safe deposit boxes - such as signature card files, or individual cashier storage, etc.

While the American Bank Supply Company "DID" sell safe deposit boxes, they also sold a lot of other banking equipment as well, including filing cabinets, signature card files, banking supplies, and "safety (or security) paper".    Just because they sold safe deposit boxes, does not mean that this item is a safe deposit type nest of boxes.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
