Question
Hello, I have a "Safe Cabinet Laboratory" with the number 41344 listed as the file inspection number on the name plate. I am not sure when my company bought it but is was before 1992. Is this a fire proof cabinet and lined with asbestos?

Answer
Rick,

The Safe Cabinet Company was acquired by Remington-Rand in 1926.   In 1955 Remington-Rand was acquired by the Sperry Corp., becoming Sperry-Rand.   At this time the safe making divisions were closed down.
If you have a "Safe Cabinet Laboratory" container it would have been manufactured between 1926 and 1955.

And yes this company was known to use asbestos as an insulation material.   Unfortunately there are no records on which cabinets or models used asbestos, so all of them are suspect until they have been tested.

As for it being "fire proof" - no such thing!   There is fire or heat resistive, where the container is rated in its ability to keep the interior temperature BELOW 350 degrees F for a period of time in a fire.

Generally file cabinets were only rated for 1/2 hour or 1 hour.   Containers over 50 years old do NOT meet any current standard for fire resistance and should NOT be used for overnight storage of any valuable documents.    This cabinet also has no burglary resistance so it should also NOT be used for overnight storage of cash, jewelry or valuables.

Hope this helps,
