Antique Safes/Major Safe Info

I purchased the contents of an old hardware store and came across a Major Safe, Model HH5800E, Serial #128607. I have the combination and it works properly. I can't seem to find any information as to weight or what it possible could be worth in today's market. It's heavy, it has a round door on the front and appears to be thick walled. That's as much as I know about it. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Carmen,

based on your description, you would have a smaller market safe.   these generally had two doors, the upper, round door, was the burglary chest, and the lower, larger square door was the fire resistive chest, for document storage.    You might only have the burglary resistive chest.

Basically these have little to no value, as they are obsolete and parts are very few and far between.    These containers haven't been manufactured since the mid to late 1970's.   they do not compare to any current model safes.    Generally we would charge customers to haul these safes away for disposal, as they have no commercial or retail value.

If the container works, and you are interested in using it, then I would say "go ahead", with the caveat - get it serviced annually (EVERY year) to keep it operational and functional.

If you would like me to verify everything that I've indicated, I would be happy to look at your safe.   Send photos of it to me at:

Make sure you restate your request so that I will know what you are looking for, as I will have forgotten this email by the time I see it.
