Antique Safes/Allied Gary safe

Is there any way to determine the security rating of a Allied Gary model number "ASPL"?  The safe is about 60" tall, 32" wide, and 28" deep and appears to be composite construction and has a four number combination.

Is it safe to assume that if it doesn't have a UL rating on it, it is not UL rated?

Thanks for any information.

Hi Mark,

If I remember correctly, the ASPL stamp simply meant that this safe was NOT standard factory production.   Something on the safe was "SPECIAL" construction.

A-G, would use a model number to indicate the standard that it was built to such as "ER" or "FR" to indicate TL-15 or "E-rated" equivalent, or a TL-30 or "F-rated" equivalent.

While this gives you an "indication", it was a manufacture's rating and NOT UL.

Bottom line - If it doesn't have a UL tag, then it is considered that it is NOT rated.    While this doesn't mean that the safe wasn't built to meet a specific standard, as far as selling the safe, or using if for storage of valuables which may need to be insured - if it doesn't have the label, then it simply "isn't"!

Unfortunately, many UL rated used safes have lost their labels over the years.   Rivets break, damage happens, safes are repainted, etc., etc., etc., and tags disappear.    So as I mentioned without the label, then it might only be considered "EQUIVALENT"!

Hope this helps,
