Antique Safes/old safe

old safe
Hi, I recently purchased this safe but it has no makers marks on it and has no key. It is currently in the locked position so I cant see inside. I was wondering if you knew just by the picture what sort of safe it was (maker/age etc) also how many levers this sort of safe would have in its lock. Any information would be gratefully recieved.
many thanks

Hi Andy,

My area of expertise is American Antique safes, not English ones.   I would recommend you check in with two other safe experts on this same site - either Tom Gordon or Mike Palmer who are both from England and very familiar with these safes.

One of the problems with trying to ID these safes, is that the majority of them came from four British towns, and due to the way that apprentices came up through the trades, when they went on their own, they simply copied what they had learned from their master or previous safe maker.

With the exception of the name plaque or plate, the key lock cover and the handle, the majority of the safes made in England during the 1800's were pretty much identical.    This leaves us with several problems including identification and appraisals, which are artificially lowered because they are all basically the same.

I would recommend your posing your question to both Tom Gordon and Mike Palmer to see if they have any ideas for you.   Also be prepared to give them much better quality photos, including close ups of any identifying features.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
