One question, do these safes have any real value besides the potential for being a very heavy boat anchor?  I have a friend that's owned this safe for at least 25-30 years and he's decided it's time for it to go.  The dials are frozen, do not turn at all.

Answer
Hi Joe,

this isn't an old "Cannon" safe, it is a "Cannonball" safe.    While the original cannonball safes had a round body, similar to a large ball, this name has been applied to similar safes having a square body and a cylinder body like this one.

As far as their having "any real value", yes they do, HOWEVER the value is dependent upon their actual condition.    Generally safes which are locked up and don't work, may be little more than a large paper weight, but there are people out there that would be interested in the safe, regardless of the condition.

As for its value - I don't evaluate safes where I can't see their entire condition, so its basically worth what you can get for it.    I would recommend advertising on eBay or Craigs List to see if you get any nibbles or bites.   Be prepared with the price you would like, but also be prepared to lower it substantially, depending on how quickly you need it to go away.

This type of safe was made from the 1890's through the 1920's.

Hope this helps,
