I have come upon a double sided, side mail slot on left safe that has a spin dial on the front for a lock. On this inside its state years 1912-1923 and inspected number 553580. How could I determine if there is any value in this safe and what year it was manufactured. I saw one of your other answers stating this may have asbestos. How would I go about finding out if it does? Thank you for your help.

Hi Mark,

Globe-Wernicke only manufactured safes from 1911-1917.   They basically had copied safes made by the Safe Cabinet Company including making the insulation out of asbestos.   Because of basic design infringements the Safe Cabinet Company took them to court and they were forced to cease making safes.

Generally there is no "antique value", these are considered "old office equipment.   Unless you collect old office equipment, these aren't going to have value.

Secondly, as most states have very strict HAZMAT regulations, especially concerning selling of, transporting of or disposal of HAZMAT, the container may actually have a negative value.

The only way to actually ensure whether or not the container has asbestos, would be to test it.   you would need several samples from the doors, and the sides of the safe.    Obviously if you drill a hole into the side of the safe, it would need to be resealed to keep the asbestos inside the safe.
Get the samples tested to get your answer.   if you are considering buying the safe, then this should be something provided by the owner of the safe.

Hope this helps,
