Anxiety Disorders/xanax
Expert: Jeanne Rust, PhD - 10/5/2011
QuestionHi. Last October, my doctor prescribed xanax to help me sleep at night. I had just given birth to a baby (in August) and major spinal surgery (in October). I took 1mg every night for about 6 months. Then, I tried to wean myself off at this rate - 2 days at .75, 2 days at .5 and then 2 days at .25. I found myself not able to be off of the drug, because I could no longer sleep at night. So, I started it again at my doctor's request. She then prescribed 2mg per night. I did not take the entire 2mg each night. Most nights would be 1mg, unless I was having a terrible time getting to sleep. Then, I would take the whole 2mg. I never took more than 2mg per day - and it was always at night to sleep.
I have been having some major health issues, so I decided again a week ago to get completely off the drug. I weaned from 2mg one night, to .75 for 2 nights. Then .5 for 2 nights and then .25 for a night. I have not taken a xanax in a week! Although I am proud of myself for "sleeping on my own," I am having some problems and wanted to know if they were related to not being on xanax anymore.
My main symptom is this feeling like I am in a dream-state. I still eat fine, drink water, play a lot with my baby (who is now 13 months old). But I can't shake this dream-like feeling. I don't know if I weaned off the medication too fast, or if it's not even related to the xanax.
Please let me know your thoughts. I am ready to feel back to myself again!
Answer
Hi, Heidi,
I'm so glad that you wrote.
Xanax can be very helpful as a sleep aid. There are other new medications that do now have the addictive qualities that xanax does. One thing that is very important to remember for the next time is that your doctor prescribes medication and she should also prescribe how you get off of it. It can be quite dangerous for some people.
Most people usually feel better when they are not on xanax. The world seems clearer, the grass greener. The dreamlike feeling I'm not familiar with but I would make another appointment with your doctor and see what she says. If she doesn't know, then see a psychiatrist. They usually know the ins and outs of all medications.
It seems to me that you might still be feeling spacey from the xanax. Let me know how you do!
