Question
Im arabic but in luv with a rican and my brother found out about my relationship with the rican boy and he is saying that he is gonna tll on me and i am really scared and worried about wat ma parents are gonna do to me can u help me take this feeling of being scared out of me?

Answer
Greetings Maria, and thanks for your question.  There really is no good reason why two people from different ethnic backgrounds can't love each other.  However, parents and families have a hard time accepting that their child might not marry someone from the same background as themselves.

Perhaps the best thing you can do is to be up front with your parents about this guy, and offer them an opportunity to meet him.  It might also be good for his parents to meet your parents, and for an older adult you trust to talk to your parents about the relationship.  If this guy can demonstrate that he will treat you with respect and respect your family also, your parents may be inclined to lighten up.

Good luck to you, and I hope this helps!

Expertise

I can answer questions on Arab culture, including differences in cultures among Arab countries and sub-groups. I can also answer questions on Christian-Muslim relations, interfaith issues in general, and human rights and peacemaking issues in the Middle East.

Experience

I was a human rights worker for four years in the Middle East, and have spent time in Palestine, Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. I speak intermediate Arabic; some Hebrew; and am starting Persian (Farsi, Dari). I have led a half-dozen educational delegations to the area for North American groups; and I have led trainings for nearly a thousand international human rights volunteers coming into the area over my years there. I am now working to launch an interfaith peace-teams based human rights organization, hopefully in the next two years. I am also currently editing the manuscript for my first book, a firsthand account of my time in the Middle East
