Question
I am in love with a Arabic man who is probably older than me. My friends said that they don't like him for me because he looks older even though he is good-looking, and they said that Arabic men tend to bossy to thier women. I know he knows that I like him, but do you think that I should listen to my friends and keep my distance even though I think about this guy 24hrs a day 7 dys a wk?

He is so kind, polite and handsome.

Answer
Greetings Curisha, and thanks for your question.  Hmmm...I think I may need more information in order to answer this question well, and this may mean that you need to get a little more information about this guy also.  How did you meet this man, and is it possible to find out how old he is?  How old are you?  What country are you writing from?  All these issues can have an impact on how to proceed next.

Thinking about a guy 24/7 is both the joy and frustration, as well as the primary symptom, of having a crush.  Sometimes it encourages us to step forward and ask out a person that would be a good partner for us; othertimes it paralyzes us from action, fearing rejection; other times, it propels us into a relationship that may not be healthy for us.  I am a little concerned as well that your friends are concerned.  Could you tell me a little more about what they're saying and why?

For now, if you can start working to answer these questions, you'll be on the right path toward making a good decision on pursuing a relationship.  If you can get back to me with more details, I'll do my best to assist further.

Many thanks and peace, and good luck!

I can answer questions on Arab culture, including differences in cultures among Arab countries and sub-groups. I can also answer questions on Christian-Muslim relations, interfaith issues in general, and human rights and peacemaking issues in the Middle East.

I was a human rights worker for four years in the Middle East, and have spent time in Palestine, Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. I speak intermediate Arabic; some Hebrew; and am starting Persian (Farsi, Dari). I have led a half-dozen educational delegations to the area for North American groups; and I have led trainings for nearly a thousand international human rights volunteers coming into the area over my years there. I am now working to launch an interfaith peace-teams based human rights organization, hopefully in the next two years. I am also currently editing the manuscript for my first book, a firsthand account of my time in the Middle East
