Arab Culture/Gift for customer

Question
I have a new and very good customer in an Egyptian Country. I would like to express my gratitude by sending him a small gift. I have no Idea what to send him. Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Greetings JD, and thanks for your question.  Something that is elegant and durable would be wise.  For example, something made of brass and wood that would look nice in the office or home--like a small chest/box, plaque, platter, wall hanging, or even an elegant pen set.  It's probably best not to send something made of glass, since it might break in shipping.  Engraving an item with words like, 'with our deepest appreciation,' is always nice.

Also, people tend to like something that shows an illustration from  your hometown or region.  This helps them to feel connected to you and your location.  If something happens to fit the bill, all the better; but otherwise go for the symbolism of elegance and durability.

Good luck to you, and I hope this helps!

peace,

Expertise

I can answer questions on Arab culture, including differences in cultures among Arab countries and sub-groups. I can also answer questions on Christian-Muslim relations, interfaith issues in general, and human rights and peacemaking issues in the Middle East.

Experience

I was a human rights worker for four years in the Middle East, and have spent time in Palestine, Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. I speak intermediate Arabic; some Hebrew; and am starting Persian (Farsi, Dari). I have led a half-dozen educational delegations to the area for North American groups; and I have led trainings for nearly a thousand international human rights volunteers coming into the area over my years there. I am now working to launch an interfaith peace-teams based human rights organization, hopefully in the next two years. I am also currently editing the manuscript for my first book, a firsthand account of my time in the Middle East
