Question
Am a Christian and my Boy friend a muslim. We both want to get married but the problem is he doesnt want to wed me in the church but wed in the islamic way which i also dont want to. kindly suggest any way we both would be happily married without any problem. Thank you

Answer
Greetings Tina, and thanks for your question.  Perhaps the best thing that you could do to compromise is to find an open-minded Christian cleric and also an open-minded Muslim cleric, and hold the ceremony outside in a park or other location, and ask them to help create an interfaith service together.  After all, it is the same God.

There is also the option of holding a Christian service and a Muslim service, one right after the other.  One could take place at home and the other in the church; or you could do the Christian service in the church and sign the Muslim wedding contract afterwards in the reception hall, or another meaningful place.

Depending on which state you live in (in the U.S.), you could possibly have both clerics sign the state marriage license.  Check with the court house of the area in which you plan to conduct the wedding.

Good luck to you, and I hope this helps!

peace,

Expertise

I can answer questions on Arab culture, including differences in cultures among Arab countries and sub-groups. I can also answer questions on Christian-Muslim relations, interfaith issues in general, and human rights and peacemaking issues in the Middle East.

Experience

I was a human rights worker for four years in the Middle East, and have spent time in Palestine, Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. I speak intermediate Arabic; some Hebrew; and am starting Persian (Farsi, Dari). I have led a half-dozen educational delegations to the area for North American groups; and I have led trainings for nearly a thousand international human rights volunteers coming into the area over my years there. I am now working to launch an interfaith peace-teams based human rights organization, hopefully in the next two years. I am also currently editing the manuscript for my first book, a firsthand account of my time in the Middle East
