Arab Culture/The Prophet Muhammad's Influence on Mankind

Question
Hi, I am doing a report for school on why I think Muhammad was the most influential person in human history. I was wondering if any direct link could be made between Muhammad and the development of algebra, which I understand occurred during his lifetime. Additionally, if you can think of any other reasons I could use (besides the obvious creation of Islam and the writing of the Qu'ran) to justify my opinion. Thank you very much for your time!

Answer
Hi Kami, and thanks for your question.  I might point you in the direction of researching the rise of Baghdad, as the first  city of the 'Golden Age of Islam' and as a center of learning.  This was really the renaissance before the Renaissance!

You may also like to look at these sites, found under a Google search on 'Muhammad and algebra,' and 'Mohammed and algebra.'

You will also find more sites under the same searches; this is just to give you a head start.

Good luck, and hope this helps!

I can answer questions on Arab culture, including differences in cultures among Arab countries and sub-groups. I can also answer questions on Christian-Muslim relations, interfaith issues in general, and human rights and peacemaking issues in the Middle East.

Experience

I was a human rights worker for four years in the Middle East, and have spent time in Palestine, Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. I speak intermediate Arabic; some Hebrew; and am starting Persian (Farsi, Dari). I have led a half-dozen educational delegations to the area for North American groups; and I have led trainings for nearly a thousand international human rights volunteers coming into the area over my years there. I am now working to launch an interfaith peace-teams based human rights organization, hopefully in the next two years. I am also currently editing the manuscript for my first book, a firsthand account of my time in the Middle East
