what do the colors in the iraqi flag symbolize or meen(not the new flag though)

There is more than one meanings for the colors and symbols in the flag, But the meaning I know is:

- Red color refers to the blood of Iraqi martyrs (people who were dead while fighting the enemies).

- White color refers to peace, also to Umayyad flag. (http://www.brainyencyclopedia.com/encyclopedia/u/um/umayyad.html)

- Green refers to the iraq green lands, also it refers to the Islamic flag.

- The three starts refers to the union that was about to be done between Iraq, Syria, and Egypt on 1978 (as I remember).

-After 1990, and the second gulf war, two Arabic words were added to the middle of the flag, these words are: "God is the greatest"
