Answer Dear Thomas
Salam Alykum bro .. thanks a lot for your question
first i'm really glad you found yourself in Islam despite all the rumors around the religion and all the deluding stereotypes .. you've simply observed the light god bless you for that and i hope your faith gets more sharpened my friend
different from what you might think but changing your name is definitely NOT a must for several reasons:
1- as Our Prophet says : "Religion was meant to make life easier not Perplex it"
2- there isn't an ISLAMIC name really.. it's just happens that islam was first spread in the middle east where Arabian names exist .. so people assume that those names are islamic .. though many Non muslims over here carry those names and same goes for some westerners who carry non islamic names
3-you've been living for so long on this earth you've made connections and built relations .. changing your name will be a tough decision that'll risk a lot of that
4-The name is just a tag .. a cover Allah judges and views your inside
5-such a decision would bring some needless Attention you know what i mean ( :

that was my view! although if you change your name that would be a big step diving deeper into islam and looking more like it ( :
Have a nice day
