Arabic - Hello!

Expert: Imad Ajam - 4/7/2006

Question
hello!

I want to learn Arabic language. Please tell me how do you say:

1." Hello!"
2."How are you?"
3."I am fine."
4."What about you?"

Answer
Dear Luqman,

In fact "Luqman" is an Arabic name, but perhaps you knew that already.

Anyway, back to your question. If you want to learn Arabic, I suggest you take lessons from a certified teacher or center, as Arabic is a very difficult language to learn and master, and takes a lot of time and perseverance.
As to your questions regarding translation of certain phrases, I'm assuming that you would like them translated into classical Arabic instead of Local or common Arabic. The difference being that classical Arabic is the formal type of the language, Adhering to proper grammatical rules. It is used in literature, newspapers, and speeches. Although It is never used in conversations, it's understood by all Arabs and Arab speakers. On the other hand, Common Arabic does not adhere to any formal grammatical rules, and is the every day spoken language of the Arabs. Common Arabic varies widely between Arab countries, and sometimes will not be understood  from one country to another.

Your translations:

1- Hello:
Al Salamu Alaykoum

2- How are you:
Kayfa Halouka

3- I am fine:
Ana Gayed
or
Ana Bihalen Gayed

4- What about you?
Maza Anka

Thank you for your question, don't hesitate to contact me if you have any more inquiries.
