Wow what an interesting answer. Many thanks to you Jim. I have 2 follow-up question (decided not to post as a new question for fear you would be less likely to see it).



1. Is mujaheddin (not sure of correct transliteration) by analogy derived from jihad? as in [he who does the jihad(pl.)]? NB:my interest here is in linguistic and cultural understanding, as opposed to religious 'struggle' itself.



2. do you perchance know where to find the the modern arabic words and etymologies for 'laptop' and 'microbe'. I was discussing with a friend and am curious.
