Dear Jeff,

I'm Fatin, Iraqi. I want to add some points to your question. Regarding learning eastern dialect, is difficult without real communication. Even the accent is difficult to learn without daily communication. Many schools abroad adopts the program of exchange between Arabs and English native speakers. So you can rely on one of them if there is a lack in the number of Arabs around. Regarding religions, I'm Mandaian, who have the old and the origin of the Aramic language which is the origin of all the Samic languages. The language is extemely different from the Standard Arabic, so it is better for you to learn standard or a specific dialect.
