Question
Hi Mr. Salier,

My name is Rose and I'm a freshman at Columbia University. I'm going to major in Archaeology and minor in Classics. Right now I am looking for Grad schools with strong programs in Ancient Mediterranean Archaeology(specifically Greece, Rome, and maybe Egypt) that offer Ph.D programs. I want to make a career out of this and have known for quite a while that I want to become a professor in this field. Do you know what some of the top programs are in the country that offer Ph.D's?

Thank You

Answer
Hi Rose,

Columbia is a great school for the Classics.  But for a PhD, go to Cambridge or Oxford in the UK.  U of Penn has a reasonable program as does the U of Chicago.  But you really need to think about what you want to specialize in.  Rome, Greece, Egypt, Israel, HIttite, Etruscan, etc... In a PhD, you will need to be fairly narrowly specialized.
