Question
I'm currently a sophmore in high school in California and am interested in
studying mesoamerican archaeology, particularly the Zapotec and Mixtec
civilizations in Puebla and Oaxaca. I am trying to research where the best
college to attend is to study this. Do you know which universities  would have
the strongest programs for what I am interested in? The US or Mexico would
be ideal. Also, do you have any suggestions on how to get started with a
career in this specialty.

Answer
Hi Kirin,

Well there are lots of colleges and universities that have courses re: Mesoamerican Archaeology and Cultures.  Among them areL

U Mass
Skidmore
Northwestern
U. Chicago
Boston U
University College London (UK)
U of Southern Florida
Arizona

Just to name a few.  But USF is among the best.

However, some sage advice:

Study archaeology, but also have a strong minor such as Econ, Chemistry, Computer Sci etc... that way when you find that you need to find other kinds of work, you have something to fall back on, even plumbing or brick laying would be good.  You will need to get a minimum of a Masters Degree and possibly a PhD but know that there are not a lot of well paying jobs in the field and that it is not uncommon to live hand to mouth, even with a Masters.

Good Luck!
