Subject: Good programs in Alabama

Question
QUESTION: Are there any good anthropology/archaeology
progams offered at universities in the state of
Alabama? In particular, does the University of
Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) or Auburn
University have a good program? If not, how
about Georgia?

Thanks,
Erin

ANSWER: Hi Erin,

Both schools have small programs that are OK.  What do you want to do with a degree in Archaeology?  Is there a particular area of study like South America or Asia? Are you limited in funding which is why you are only looking at schools in these two states?  If you could give me a bit more info, I may be able to direct you more effectively.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: I am currently an electrical engineer. Having received my degree from
Auburn, all other schools in the state are required to accept my credits, which
is the reason behind my desire to pursue another bachelor's degree in
Alabama. I am no more limited in funds than the average student and I made
very good grades while earning my EE degree. So, scholarships may be a
possibility. I have only recently become interested in the field, and, thus, have
not narrowed down a particular culture as of yet. However, I enjoy reading
about the Incas, Egyptians (of course), and biblical history.

Thanks for the previous speedy answer,
Erin

Answer
Hi Erin,

Well I must say that your first choice is a great backup since working as an archaeologist will not make you rich by any means.  Being an EE will at least give you an opportunity to do work that pays well.

As far as I am aware, the colleges and universities in neither state have programs that go outside of the US.  You would need to go to a Columbia University or a University of Chiago to find universities that have programs in Inca or Egyptian Archaeology.  But getting a degree in Anthropology/Archaeology from any of the schools in either state would be a good sound education.  Besure to study Cultrual Resource Management (CRM) as well as GIS and Geology to round out your education in these areas.  This will also ensure that you can find work.  Please understand that with a BA in the field, it will only get you a job as a shovel bum.  You will need a Masters in the field to work as a site supervisor, director or something higher.

Also join www.shovelbums.org  This is a great clearing house for jobs in the field, even field schools and volunteer opportunities.
