Archaeology/Local Archeology Digs

Question
Hello, my name is Carlos and this year I am beginning my freshman year at Seton Hill University. I am majoring in history and would really like to go into an archeology profession.

I was wondering if you knew of any local ammature sites that I could begin working at during my years in school to get a head start. Seton Hill is located in Greensburg Pennsylvania, about half an hour out of Pittsburgh. Any information that you could provide would be so helpful.

Thank you so much,
~ Carlos Peredo

Answer
Hi Carlos,

Does Seton Hill have an Archaeology Program?  If so, they may have a summer field school where you can get credit!.  If not, then ask your counselor to find out if any other college or university near by has a summer field school.  U of P Pittsburgh may have an urban archaeology program going on this summer but it may be too late to get in.

Also join www.shovelbums.org.  Each spring, they list all of the field schools.

I believe that Pittsburgh may also have a chapter of the Pennsylvania Archaeological Society and they some times do summer digs where an amature can participate.

Good Luck.
