Archaeology - Archaeology with Business? Does it fit or is it just odd?
Expert: Ralph Salier - 10/27/2009
Question Hi, I am about to start an undergraduate degree, “Bachelor of Archaeological Practice”, I want to pursue a career in Archaeology, but I do know that it is a hard field to get into and that I will also probably need to do a masters. My question is, what other areas can a Bachelor of Archaeological Practice degree lead into? Seeing as it is such as career specific degree, the degree includes subjects in Archaeology, Anthropology, Sciences’ and Arts/History subjects, so it does still cover a broad range of subjects. I just don’t want to finish my undergrad degree and be unemployed, are there many areas someone with an Archaeology degree can work in?
I also have the option of doing a second degree along with the Archaeology one, a “Bachelor of Business”, while I think having a Bachelor of Business would open the door to more career options, I want to know if this would actually go well with the Archaeology Degree, I’d like it as a backup, but also something that complements my Archaeology Degree, and doesn’t just look odd with it. Does a Business Degree go good with an Archaeology Degree, or is it just odd?
Thanks very much for your time.
Answer Hi Michael,
I would go with both degrees. Why? Well with a BA in Archaeological Practice (is that in any way related to a Cultural Resource Manager) you will be able to find jobs as a shovel bum. These jobs pay between $15 and $25 an hour and may come with a living stipend but not always. On occasion you may find more steady work with one of the consultancies but generally you will need an MA or PhD for t hose. Having the BAB is a good idea as it will make you far more employable. It may not be in archaeology but it is still work. Another alternative is to get a teaching certification. This way you will work for most of the year but have your summers off. As a teacher working with kids is not a song and dance, it is hard work and some times not much fun but if you specialize as a middle or highschool math or science teacher, you will always find work and still have your summers off. With summers off, you can shovel bum all you want. If you do a 12 month pay cycle as a teacher, you will get a double pay during the summer. Teaching will pay between $35K and perhaps $50K for Math or Science Specialists, it depends on your degree, the number of years teaching and the state pay rate.
My masters is in Business Anthropology while my BA is in archaeology. While I found work as an archaeologist my career has been based on my Business Anthropology degree. I continue to work in archaeology as a consultant having expertise in ground stone tools, napped stone and the use of fire hardening technology. But, this took a long time to achieve.
I hope this helps.
