Archaeology - unusual find

Expert: Ralph Salier - 9/30/2009

Question
Item found in Gas, Kansas 09-29-2009. Item was approximately 3 inches below gound. Not perfectly round like most cannon balls, is metal, possibly iron or lead. Pictures inclosed.  Any ideas?
Can send additional pictures.

Answer
Hi Bob,

If it is iron, then it will be magnetic.  If not then chances are it is lead.  Looks a bit like grape shot but bigger.  Is it flattened?  Looks like a disk rather then a ball.

Please send the other pics to rsalier@hotmail.com

Where is Gas KS?  I am wondering if there is an old calvery fort near by.  Grape shot would have been shot from a cannon.

Thanks
Ralph
