Archaeology/trying to identify a cannonball?

Question
Many years ago I found two solid lead balls 2" in diameter. The second one seems to be a lead alloy as it is a gray color. Also is has a diamond shaped marking on a small flat. The mark appears to have two letters within the diamond. The first ball found is soft lead and dark gray in color. This ball was found within a half mile of the Legionville, PA site of the training camp of Mad Anthony Wayne. As it is soft it appears to have marks that seem to be made from an impact. In the 1970's I was told that these were "grape" shot but that doesn't seem to fit the definition of grape shot. Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Lee,

Sounds like you have what is commonly called canister shot.  Basically a shot gun shell for a cannon.  These canisters would hold upwards of 20 or so of these 1.5 to 2.5" round shots and were used to "defeat" calvary charges.  These were deadly and could mow down a charging advance very effectively.

Hope this helps.
