Question
QUESTION: Hi

I am an Engineering(IT) graduate from India and I was wondering, if it would be possible for me to do Masters in archeology, since I am very much interested in history and its my passion. I had done my engineering due to parental pressure and I am not interested nor am I good at that(UG scores not that great). Since history's always been my passion, I would like to choose that as my career. I am interested in history of any age, as long as its the past waiting to be unfolded. So, I would be very glad if you could guide me accordingly.

ANSWER: Hi Aishwarya,

I understand parental pressure.  Mine did not want me to go into Archaeology either but compromised, I also had to study Geology and Computer Science.  So, I have 2 degrees, one in Geology/Computer Science and the other in Anthropology/Archaeology (BA).

As I understand it, it is not possible to get a BA in Archaeology in India.  I find this hard to believe but since I have not found a program in India that proves this wrong, I come to the conclusion that you will need a Masters in the field.

From your description, you want to be a generalist and not necessarily specialize in a particular culture.  However, if I had the opportunity, I would probably study on of the following:  The Roma people and their migratory routes and their ancient sites to gain a better understanding of these people or the Veddoids found in isolated pockets in South Asia who may be related to the Australian Aboriginals as well as  the Sam peoples of South Africa.  These people are poorly understood and the archaeology of their sites my lead to a better understanding of where they came from.

I would contact all of the universities in India and see which has programs in Archaeology.  If none are satisfactory, consider doing your studies in the UK. Since India is a common wealth nation, you can go to the UK universities.  All of them have good archaeology programs although the best are still Oxford and Cambridge.

I hope this has helped. If you have more questions, please let me know.

QUESTION: Thank you for your informative reply. I have always been fascinated by the Greek and Egyptian history. I would like to know which universities offer specialized courses in those fields. I totally agree that in India we do not have much options to choose from.

Answer
Hi Aishwarya,

The UK is probably the best option for you.  Again, Oxford and Cambridge have the best programs in the classics and Egyptology.  But it depends on where you want to study.  You could also go to Egypt or Greece and study at universities there as well.  The only restriction you may find is funding your further education.  You are also missing the basic skill sets needed in archaeology and you may choose to get a BA in Archaeology to ensure that you acquire those skills.
